CORINTH 2020 ELECTION GUIDE
CORINTH, TX, September 29, 2020- It's time to cast your vote! Corinth City Hall will be hosting early and election day voting for the 2020 Election. The election includes the City of Corinth General and Special Election and items for the county, state, and federal elections.
What is on the ballot?
General Election
The City of Corinth has a mayor and five City Council members elected at large for two-year terms. Three City Council positions will be placed on the Tuesday, November 3, 2020, general election ballot: Place I, Place III, and Place IV. Candidate filings are available to the public online.
- Place 1: Sam Burke (incumbent, uncontested)
- Place 3: Steve Holzwarth (Candidate), Lindsey Rayl (Candidate)
- Place 4: Tina Henderson (incumbent, uncontested)
Special Election:
A Special Election will also be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, for voters to consider two local ballot propositions for the creation of the Fire Control, Prevention and Emergency Medical Services District ("Fire District") and the appointment of a Board of Directors for the Fire District.
Proposition A
"The creation of the City of Corinth Fire Control, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services District dedicated to fire safety and emergency medical services programs and the adoption of a proposed local sales and use tax at a rate of one-fourth of one percent."
Proposition B
"Should the eligible voters authorize the creation of the City of Corinth Fire Control, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services District dedicated to fire safety and emergency medical services programs, may the Corinth City Council approve a resolution to appoint the Corinth City Council to serve as the Board of Directors of the City of Corinth Fire Control, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services District."
What are things to know about Proposition A and B?
- The proposed Fire District allocates a portion of the City sales tax to the fire department to assist in covering expenditures related to the City of Corinth share of the Fire Department service agreement with the Lake Cities.
- The Fire District does not impact the fire service agreement with the City of Lake Dallas, Town of Hickory Creek, or Town of Shady Shores. Earlier this year, the cities renewed the fire service agreement for an additional five years, beginning October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2026.
- Currently, a .25% Street Maintenance Sales Tax is effective in Corinth, but that .25% sales tax will expire December, 2020 because the City has opted to use alternative funding mechanisms to continue the street maintenance program. If the Fire District is approved by the voters, that .25% tax expiring in December, 2020 will be collected and used for funding of the Fire District. If the Fire District is not approved by the voters, the overall sales tax charged for purchases made within the City will be reduced by .25%.
- If Proposition A passes and Proposition B fails, the City Council will appoint the Fire District Board. However, the Council will not be able to appoint themselves as the board.
